How do we fill the void!
When there is something missing, we try to find it. If there is a void,
we try to fill it. As adults, we have a greater ability, at least we should,
because our brain is now fully developed to reflect on our options and make
good choices. For many children, it is so very painful, and they are not sure
why. The one thing for sure is that they, we, all want to ease the pain. Some unfortunately seek “painkillers,” ( not just the Medicinal type ) and most unfortunately develope the need then dependence on.
As you have read and will read, many go to great lengths to avoid the
emotional pain, including the ultimate act of suicide. (The effects of emotional pain are expressed clearly in the section pertaining to bullying.)
Most unfortunately for our children, with unlimited and often
unsupervised access to the Internet, there are great opportunities for poor
choices. They will seek what they feel they are missing! Attention? They are
opening up their world to potential predators and harm-doers. This is when
they are most vulnerable. The true risk is incomprehensible.
Generation Y children and young adults often appear uncomfortable when
asked to communicate, especially to talk about their feelings. Parents often
perceive it as a lack of trust or not caring. But it is often due to their lack
of comfort with traditional interpersonal communication. They are not sure
how to make the connection. They are being deprived of learning the skill of
communicating one on one. Their number one form of communication is a less responsive, less risky, less emotional, and less responsible—texting. I hear itand see it so frequently.
The joy of self-expression through verbal communication is becoming a
lost skill. It is a much-needed outlet for pent-up emotions. We often judge being quiet or uncommunicative as being shy. What does that really mean?
